We’re inspired by tradition, driven by creativity, and rooted in community—and every beer we brew carries that thread.
Our Story
Selvedge Brewing was born from a love of craft, creativity, and community. We were founded in 2020 as part of the restoration of the historic Woolen Mills in Charlottesville, Virginia, and our name pays homage to those textile roots—selvedge is the finished edge of fabric, the part that holds everything together.
After several years at The Wool Factory, we expanded into a new 10,000-square-foot home in Charlottesville’s Bellair neighborhood in 2024. The taproom features a rotating lineup of beers brewed on-site, served with careful attention to all the details that go into the best possible pour. A locally inspired food menu adds to the experience, with plenty of space to gather.
Led by Head Brewer Josh Skinner, our 10-barrel brewhouse is where tradition meets innovation. From clean lagers to distinctive ales, every beer we make is crafted with care and meant to be enjoyed among friends.
Our Head Brewer, Josh Skinner
Drinkability is at the core of Skinner’s brewing philosophy and he relishes in developing beers that invite another sip. A self-professed “lager nerd,” this is where Josh’s passion lies – from super pale to just shy of a stout – noting that every step in developing a lager is critical.
Josh enjoys incorporating local and regional ingredients into his beers as much as possible. A lover of food himself, he’s energized by the prospect of collaborating with Chef Tucker Yoder who is Executive Chef at The Wool Factory, which operates both Broadcloth, an ingredient-driven restaurant, and the taproom of Selvedge.
Josh grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and studied archeology at Radford University. His homebrewing hobby turned into his full-time career in 2012 when he joined the team at Blue Mountain Brewery and enrolled at the Siebel Institute of Technology, a professional brewing program based in Chicago. He made the move to Champion Brewing just as they were beginning a major expansion and played a crucial role in the brewery’s growth for eight years, eventually serving as their Head Brewer and Director of Brewing Operations.
Our Bellair Taproom is now open at 2415 Ivy Road, Ste 190. Alongside our award-winning beers, we offer a full locally-inspired food menu with plenty of space to gather.
